Educational Field Visit to Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Abusar (Jhunjhunu)
On 28 January 2026, Birla School Pilani organised an educational field visit to the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Abusar, Jhunjhunu, for 100 students of Classes V to VIII. The visit was planned to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-life applications, with a special focus on sustainable farming and modern agricultural practices. The students reached the KVK campus at 10:30 a.m. and were warmly received by the scientists at the centre. The visit began with a guided tour of the research facilities, demonstration crop fields, greenhouses and polyhouses. Students observed how scientific research is translated into practical agricultural solutions. One of the key highlights of the visit was the demonstration of vermicomposting techniques used in organic farming, along with the preparation of organic insecticides and pesticides. Students were also introduced to seed grading units and various modern tools and equipment used in agricultural operations. The tour included visits to greenhouses and polyhouses where exotic vegetables such as cabbage, red cabbage, knol-khol, broccoli and cauliflower were grown under controlled environmental conditions. Demonstration plots of crops like mustard, onion, garlic, gram and oats showcased the development of hybrid seeds with specific desirable traits. Students also learned about intercropping practices and their benefits. In addition, the facility’s rainwater harvesting structures and modern irrigation systems were explained, helping students understand efficient water management in agriculture. The learning experience became multidisciplinary as the scientists discussed the role of mathematics and economics in calculating field area, crop yield, productivity and sustainability. Overall, the field visit was a highly enriching experience. It provided students with a comprehensive understanding of the source of food, the importance of sustainable agricultural practices, and the innovations shaping modern-day farming, making it a memorable and valuable learning opportunity.
